Prime TV Picks: Seven Essential Movies This Coming Week

Top Selection

This Satirical Thriller

Director Coralie Fargeat's unflinching satire examines the demanding standards for women's appearance as well as the feared consequences of growing older. Hollywood star Demi Moore offers a masterful portrayal playing Elisabeth, a 50-year-old actress demoted to presenting a fitness program on television. Forced aside thanks to her deceitful superior Harvey, she turns to a mysterious and terrifying treatment titled "The Substance". This creates a youthful duplicate called Sue, leading to an increasingly toxic connection between them. Friday 17 October, the streaming service Paramount+

This Mystery Thriller

This classic whodunit thriller includes Knightley as Laura, a top-notch writer who opts for a break from covering international wars to embark on a high-end voyage with a terminally ill Norwegian shipping heiress and donor, her partner, as well as other affluent guests. However when an enigmatic female falls into the sea during the evening and everyone insists she wasn't real, Laura's investigative instincts kick in. Out now, the Netflix platform

Presence

Soderbergh pushes his creative boundaries through this nifty ghostly tale shot entirely from the perspective of a ghost. When a household with Lucy Liu as Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe moves into their fresh home, the camera – representing the ghost – shadows their actions. Chloe seems conscious of the ghostly being, and the entity appears guarding her. However, the motive remains? It's a fun idea that remains concise, with a twist that could catch you off guard. Saturday 11 October, afternoon and evening times, Sky Cinema

Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy

The iconic actor fully commits to his cult stardom through this meta comedy caper. He acts as a narcissistic film star named Nicolas Cage who takes on a $1m payday to visit a celebration in Mallorca for the wealthy superfan Javi. Recruited by the CIA to gather intel on the alleged criminal, Cage's “nouveau shamanic acting ability” is put to the test. Saturday 11 October, evening, on Channel 4

This Creepy Thriller

The director's claustrophobic thriller holds up well without requiring a sequel. Located in 1970s Colorado, a series of kidnappings has made the youth frightened. After Finney gets captured by the kidnapper and held captive in a dungeon, he anticipates a terrible outcome. But the disconnected phone mounted nearby keeps ringing, with spooky callers offering help, while the prescient dreams from his sibling Gwen might rescue him. A genuinely scary movie. October 11th, late evening, on Film4

The Tammy Faye Biopic

In the struggle between spirituality and money, the winner is obvious for materialism in this director's wonderfully garish true story regarding the shamed religious broadcaster and her criminal husband. The actor plays the venal Jim, who proclaims initially, claiming divine approval for wealth. He and Tammy Faye begin profiting from the American public's religious faith. It's an extravaganza of poor styling, bad makeup and insincerity, yet Chastain manages to show the character in a likable light. Tuesday 14 October, 1.15am, the Film4 channel

Black Bag

This week's additional entry from the filmmaker presents a spy mystery as precise like the turtlenecks sported by Fassbender's British agent. His assignment is to identify a double agent among the team out of five possibilities – including is his own wife. Each performer are masters of deadpan cool, leading to a delightful psychological game of fact versus fiction takes place. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela take part the intelligent intelligence fun. October 17th, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, Sky Cinema Premiere
