Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Injections Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that individuals who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a leading health publication points out that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users buying these medications need to be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a reversion to original weight within about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The research, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the injections explains the accelerated weight return.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Issue?

The NHS advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

People who have stopped the jabs describe a intense return of appetite.

"It was like a switch that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled an individual.

The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Use

Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural changes.
